 The study adds to an ever-growing list of potential health benefits from the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, identified as one of the super-nutrients taking the food and supplements industry by storm.

Much of its healthy reputation that is seeping into consumer consciousness is based largely on evidence that it can aid cognitive function, may help protect the heart against cardiovascular disease, and could reduce the risk of certain cancers.
"Evidence is limited that fish oil supplementation can reduce body fat in overweight or obese subjects, and, in the studies that do provide evidence, little effort was made to control for the confounding influence of physical activity," wrote lead author Alison Hill in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
"The present study is the first properly controlled trial to show an improvement in body composition in overweight or obese subjects after intervention with omega-3 fatty acids and regular aerobic exercise," she added.
The researchers, from the University of South Australia in Adelaide, examined the effects of effects of fish oil and exercise, alone and together, on fat mass, lean mass, and cardiovascular health in 75 overweight adults (age range 25-65).
The participants all had at least one of the cardiovascular risk factors of mild hypertension, elevated blood triacylglycerols levels, and high total cholesterol levels.
Subjects were randomly assigned to receive daily fish oil supplements (260 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 60 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), Hi-DHA, NuMega Ingredients) or placebo (sunflower oil), with or without an exercise regimen.
The fish-oil supplements led to a decrease in blood triacylglycerols levels (14 per cent) and an increase plasma HDL cholesterol levels (10 per cent) relative to baseline amounts. The placebo sunflower oil decreased blood triacylglycerols levels and increase plasma HDL cholesterol levels by five and three per cent, respectively.
The combination of fish oil and exercise reduced fat mass by 1.6 kg, with no significant changes observed for fish oil alone, or placebo with or without exercise. No significant change in lean mass was observed for any of the groups.
"We have confirmed the independent benefits of supplementation with DHA-rich fish oil for triacylglycerols, and HDL cholesterol," said the researchers. "We also showed that both fish oil supplementation and regular moderate exercise reduced body fat in overweight or obese subjects who were at risk of CVD."
"Future research should evaluate the efficacy of this combined intervention over a longer duration and investigate the mechanism underlying the improvements in body composition," they concluded.
The retail market for weight management products was estimated by Euromonitor International to be worth US$0.93bn (€0.73) in Europe in 2005 and $3.93bn in the US, indicating that calls to slim down or face the health consequences is being heeded by a slice of the overweight population at least.

 With all the new weight loss medications entering the market – and engendering controversy – many people are also looking to supplements to aid weight loss. For information, I looked at the recommendations of prominent naturopathic doctors and the organization Natural Standard, a reputable database of the latest research on supplements.  You’ve likely never heard of many of the supplements listed here, but they’ve all a Natural Standard Grade A or B for having positive scientific evidence supporting their use for weight loss.

1. Hydroxycitrate, Hydroxycitric Acid or HCA

HCA is actually a salt derived from the rind of dried fruit, in particular the Southeast Asian plants brindal berry and Garcinia cambodia. A traditional Indian folk remedy, HCA has been used to treat joint and stomach problems. It’s sold in drug stores and supplement stores as HCA, brindleberry or brindal berry and garcinia, and is the primary ingredient in diet products with names like Citrilite, Citrin, PhyrtriMax, Bio-Max 3000, and Garcinia Trim-Pulse. Research backs the effectiveness of HCA at reducing fat absorption, increasing fat metabolism,  inhibiting appetite, and lowering LDL cholesterol.


2. Chitosan

Read about the origins of chitosan and it sounds pretty gross. Chitosan is a fiber that comes from chitin,  which is the main component in the shells (or exoskeletons, for you scientific types) of insects and crustaceans. Recommended by wholistic practitioners to lower cholesterol , chitosan has also been promoted as a type of dietary fiber that may help reduce the absorption of fat.

3. Whey protein

Healthand sports supplement stores have been touting the benefits of whey protein for years, but mainly for building muscle, which it appears to do. However, whey protein also suppresses appetite, thus helping you eat less. Whey protein, which as you can guess is derived from the whey of milk, is an easily digestible form of protein. It contains high levels of the amino acid cysteine.  And having more muscle helps with weight loss too.

4. Beta Glucan

A concentrated soluble fiber derived from yeasts, mushrooms, and algae, beta-glucans come in many forms but all have the effect of lowering cholesterol with the additional benefits of weight loss and helping control diabetes.

5. Conjugated Linoleic Acid or  CLA

Omega 3 fatty acids and healthy fats are beneficial for all sorts of things, from brain health to heart health. But one of them, CLA, seems to aid in weight loss as well (in addition to having anticancer benefits). CLA is found primarily in beef and dairy products, so if you’re vegetarian or vegan, you likely aren’t getting enough. CLA-enriched dairy products are in the works, but right now you have to take a supplement, most of which are derived from safflower oil.  CLA is one of the more popular health food supplements for reduction of body fat, though the evidence is mixed. Animal studies have sown it to be effective, but human studies have been mixed.

6. Glucomannan?

Derived from an Asian plant called Konjac, glucomannan is a fiber considered extremely effective for diabetes and blood sugar control, with the additional properties of weight loss.  Glucomannan has traditionally been an important food source—whether fried, baked, or as a candy. The fiber helps absorb water in the digestive tract, reducing cholesterol and carbohydrate absorption, and research supports its role as an obesity treatment. Glucomannan is also traditionally used as a gel to be applied to the skin.

7. Mango Seed Fiber?

Fiber from the seeds of the African mango tree is a traditional African weight loss remedy that’s finding new popularity either alone or combined with other dietary supplements. It’s most commonly used in Africa as a natural antibiotic  and pain reliever. It’s currently being studied for weight loss, diabetes and cholesterol reduction.

What’s the best way to lose weight? Should you reduce the total number of calories in your diet or lower the total glycemic load? There is scientific evidence to support both approaches, so which one should you follow? Well, it turns out that both are important!

Everyone knows that calories are important, but not everyone knows that when you eat those calories you can do three things with them: burn them for energy; store them as fat; or use them to build lean body mass.

What you do with those calories is determined by the hormones in your body, the most important being insulin. Your insulin level is determined not only by the number of calories you eat, but by the type of calories you eat. This is why what you eat (glycemic load) is as important as how much you eat (calories)!

The Importance of Glycemic Load

Insulin is the main driver of fat storage, and you only secrete insulin when your blood sugar goes up. The faster your blood sugar goes up, the more insulin you secrete and the more fat you store.

The glycemic load of a meal is a measure of how fast a meal raises your blood sugar, so it’s really a measure of how much insulin you secrete after a meal, and, therefore, how fattening that meal is.

In general, only meals containing carbohydrates raise your blood sugar and have a positive glycemic load. Meals containing only protein and/or fat do not raise your blood sugar, and, therefore, have a glycemic load of zero.

This means that you do not store the calories in a meal as fat (even if it’s a very high-calorie meal) if it doesn’t have any carbohydrates in it.  You’ll need to either burn those calories for energy or use them to build lean body mass.

For example, bacon and eggs have a high number of calories, but aren’t fattening unless you eat them with carbohydrates (toast and potatoes). So if you’re going to eat a high-calorie meal containing fat, make sure it has no carbohydrates!

When you eat carbohydrates is important

You store fat mainly during the day when you’re eating (via insulin secretion) and burn fat mainly at night when you’re sleeping (when insulin levels drop). Since your body needs an energy source to keep your organs functioning while you sleep, you start breaking down fat to provide that energy. 

A low insulin level is the biggest stimulus for your fat cells to start releasing fat, and this happens at night when you’re not eating. The second biggest stimulus for your fat cells to release fat is a high growth hormone level, so you get a growth hormone surge right after you fall asleep.

Insulin antagonizes growth hormone. Insulin causes you to store fat and growth hormone causes you to burn fat. If you eat foods before bed that spike your blood sugar and give you an insulin surge (i.e., carbohydrates), you will store fat while you’re sleeping instead of breaking down fat, and the growth hormone you secrete will be less effective in burning fat.

When you eat, therefore, can be important as what you eat. Eating carbohydrates before bed is more fattening than eating them for breakfast, so if you’re going to eat carbohydrates, don’t have them with fat and don’t eat them before bed!

The Low-Glycal Diet™ App uses total calories and total glycemic load to calculate the total number of “glycals” in a meal, which is a better predictor of how fattening a meal is.

The “glycal” is calculated from a formula developed by Dr. Jeffrey S. Dunham and is based on the latest medical research.

You assemble a meal by choosing the individual foods in that meal. The app then calculates the total glycals in that meal and gives you a green, yellow or red result. 

The ranges of green, yellow and red become stricter after 6pm (the app reads the time of day), since eating carbohydrates at night can be more fattening than eating them earlier in the day (see above).

In order to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit, or eat fewer total calories than your body burns. No single food can determine whether you lose weight, but some foods, such as yogurt, can make it easier for you to reduce your total calorie intake. Eat yogurt as part of an overall balanced diet, and consult with a nutritionist as you develop your weight loss plan.

Lean Protein
Yogurt can be good for weight loss because it is low in calories, with only about 120 calories in a cup of fat-free yogurt. Each 1-cup serving of yogurt provides about 8 g to 13 g protein, which is a filling nutrient because it slows down digestion so you feel less hungry for the next meal. Choose low-fat or fat-free yogurt instead of yogurt made from whole milk, because fat increases the calorie content.

Uses
Save calories and support weight loss by using yogurt instead of high-fat, creamy salad dressings or vegetable dips. Have no-sugar-added flavored yogurt as a sweet alternative to high-calorie desserts such as ice cream, candy or baked goods. For a snack, a container of yogurt makes a convenient, portion-controlled option that promotes weight loss better than a multi-serving bag of potato chips or crackers. Add some fruit or whole-grain cereal to your yogurt for a calorie-controlled breakfast.

High-Calcium Food
Yogurt is naturally high in calcium, and individuals who eat about 1,200 mg to 1,400 mg calcium per day tend to have lower weights or better success in weight loss diets, according to the Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center. A cup of yogurt has about 300 mg calcium. This potential effect of calcium may occur when you get calcium from food sources, not from dietary supplements, and too much calcium from supplements may lead to toxic effects such as kidney stones.

Considerations
To avoid slowing down your weight loss because of empty calories from added sugars, choose plain yogurt and add spices if you are eating it as a dip, or fruit, if you prefer it to be sweeter. Another low-calorie option is yogurt with a non-nutritive sweetener. Yogurt is best for weight loss when you eat it on its own, or with low-calorie, nutritious foods, such as fruit or oatmeal, and not when you add high-calorie foods, such as candy pieces or granola.
